Boroughbridge was the Parliamentary Borough from either mediaeval days, electing deuce Members of Parliament to the unreformed Commons. It experienced the "burgage" franchise, meaning that the right to vote was attached to ownership of certain pieces of property in the borough, & it experienced less than C certified elector per period it was abolished in the great reform act of 1832, and was the pocket borough entirely under the control of the Dukes of Newcastle. Augustus FitzRoy, who was later Prime Minister as the Third Duke of Grafton, wwhen elected MP for Boroughbridge around 1756, however he never sat for the borough as he favorite to represent Bury St. Edmunds, where he had also been elected.

Around Boroughbridge is the village of Aldborough, once the places of the Roman settlement Isurium Brigantum(SE406664). There is a little museum.
